Note for all [SRS] members this is the two reviews made by [SRS]Hungry Joe and [SRS]Fragz pieced together there isn't many chances there is a added score given near the end which if you disagree with and have played please pop me a pm with your reasons and i'll get it change/added in.
Right up front first thoughts.

SP:

1: o my god couldn’t look any more like a console game if you tried.
2: graphics (not important really) but your very very limited on what you can set and just to show how basic it is it doesn’t even cover sli/crossfire on top of that I prefer CoD4
3: First load into signal player puts you right in the game before you can do anything setting wise.
4: game play seems ok on the 1 and a bit mission I’ve done (will report more later)

MP:

1: Why the hell can you only choice from 4 preset game types on first joining.
2: Again graphics don’t even come close to CoD4 in my eye. (Maybe I need an eye test)

After thoughts after playing.

SP ([SRS]Hungry Joe):
Warning: Major spoilers. Although, you'll find out you're not missing out on much.

Finally finished this game to see what all the fuss is about. Haven't touched Multiplayer as I'm not sure I really even want to. Probably won’t because what good is it if I can’t play with the folks I want to?

Right, so after a ridiculously long intro which just regurgitates the events of CoD4 because apparently no one playing this game played the previous! Come on guys. Unskippable intro cut-scenes should have gone the way of the dodo. Also this nice long intro isn’t skip able if you hit the start new game after completing the game.

I have noticed however now they've spent a lot of money for voice talent once that part ends and I'm greeted by a rough voice of an American general explaining how "history is written by the victors."

Now we get to the familiar "Run a course" tutorial. You're now starting off as an American soldier, specifically an Army Ranger. And once again you're just a faceless, personality-less drone. *Sigh* Disappointing, but it's not like CoD has been played for storytelling.

So first mission is to kill militia who for some unknown reason hates your guts. After a few minutes of a good old-fashioned shootout across a body of water while a bridge layer works we jump in a convoy and man a Gatling gun. Oh, and a jet levels a building in spectacular fashion (Fragz : I didn’t even notice it the first time). Love the shockwave blowing the fence back. I could do without the cringe-worthy frat-boy reactions from the NPC soldiers I'm with though.

So of course there's an ambush that destroys the car I'm manning the gun on and it's on to house-to-house fighting. Now the real game begins! I've noticed so far there really isn't any graphical face-lifts from CoD4, just new skins and level design - except improved explosions. But there's one thing that really irks me now - when you get shot, blood drops appear on your screen as well as it turning red. This quickly becomes frustrating as it impedes your vision and makes it harder than it should be to take cover and recover (Fragz : Agrees).

Plenty of ways to clean out the school, very easy to flank enemies as usual - bad guys in this game are as clueless as ever. Still a game of "whack-a-mole" with assault rifles. So next mission. It's the much-hyped snow one.

You're not McTavish. You're still ANOTHER faceless drone now called "Roach." Come ON guys! It's not 1990 anymore! Even the protagonist in Doom had more personality than what you're giving us.

Anyways, you're to climb a mountain - and I mean actually climb it. You have to press and hold the mouse buttons to make Roach move. Fail to do it right and he plummets to his death. See, now this is an example of interaction to the point of being annoying. There's no reason we couldn't have that as a cutscene or just made it as simple as pressing and holding "forward."

Now the real mission begins. You kill some folks in the cover of a snowstorm which is really cool - you can slip past most the guards unseen. But for some reason even though they won't seem to notice you creep by, if there's a dead solider about that same distance from them, they'll notice him. Sloppy AI coding there.

The escape is ripped out of a Hollywood movie, two men taking on half an entire base by themselves. Yeah, ARMA 2 this is not. The run on foot is fun, but the snowmobile race is not. It is stupid-hard to steer the thing, so you're almost bound to run into a tree and die more than once. Mercifully, it finally ends.

Now on to the part that made FOX News reporters foam at the mouth - the infamous airport massacre. It's rather surreal - you're forced to walk leisurely and don't even have to fire a shot at anyone. But of course where's the fun in that? Then the Russian equivalent of SWAT show up and it's on. They have riot shields - which however make them cannon fodder for your grenade launcher. It's just loads of fun to watch an entire wall of them thrown around like bowling pins. And in what will turn into a reoccurring event, your character gets shot (Fragz : But on good note you can’t say you saw it coming).

And back to McTavish. First you need to track down an arms dealer's buddy to find the dealer. And finally we get some interactive cut scene fun. Remember to duck. But after this, the whole level goes downhill fast. Remember in CoD4 you would fight a nearly unending horde? Iiiiiitttt'ssss baaaaack! You'll spend a good 10 minutes pinned down near the very start of the map (Fragz : Spray and pray).

When you finally break through that, your two comrades get themselves killed and leave you on your own to deal with more militia than you'd ever want to. It's here the game sinks to its lowest point - it stops being as much of a game as it becomes more of a test of your patience and a trial-and-error exercise. Go through that alley get shot. Respawn, go through that alley again, kill that guy, but then get shot by another one on the roof to your left. The ENTIRE level is this way. And it's ridiculous (Fragz : I didn’t find it that bad however you couldn’t just stay in one area and clear it and it stay clear).

The only reaction you'll have when McTavish tackles the dealer you've been trying to find for the past half-hour or hour (depends which difficulty you're playing) is, "FINALLY this s**tty level is over!"

So now the Russians have invaded America. Gee, could we get even MORE far-fetched? No demand for explanations first? No plausible denial? No word from the UN?

Well this one's much better than the previous, but reveals opens another flaw in the game's design - the modelling and design of characters makes it hard to differentiate invading enemy from your guys without the help of friendly NPC name tags (Fragz : It is hard but I found them to be slightly red in colour). On the plus side, you get to control a predator drone's missiles. Which is a blast but doesn't last nearly as long as it should. There was so much more they could have done with it, and I wanted to do.

Back to South America with McTavish. Now it's time to escape - the whole town wants to kill you (Hahah, anyone else love Black Hawk Down? I know IW and I did). There's actually a sense of urgency like my favourite mission in CoD4 - The Bog. Although nothing in this game tops the final walk to the tank with RPGs flying overhead in Bog. That was on a plateau by itself.

The finale however is just weak and feels tacked-on. You missed the chopper and have to run unarmed to catch it! And there's a time limit! Yeah, as if the handfuls of militia shooting at you didn't give enough reason to get out of there (Fragz : O its one of the many times they try to save you falling).

Alright back to the Rangers. The Russians have apparently taken the capital! Oh no! You get to run through the capital building and clean it out to allow an evac of the area. Anyone else reminded of the woefully neglected 2003 game Freedom Fighters? Probably not, but really you should be. It was a good one. But hey back to the game at hand here.

Clean it out and then it's back to Russia, a remote gulag off the coast. Now this is pretty fun one - you get the riot shield here, and use it almost right away - you're trapped in a centre armoury suspended in the centre of the place (geez, who designed this place?) and need to hold off fire until your team unlocks the door. But once you find your objective you'll either be delighted or like me - feeling cheated again. Message to whoever wrote the story for this game - better update your resume. The prisoner is Captain Price from CoD4! Now you got to do yet another "should have been a cut scene" run, this time the prison's getting the crap shelled out of it - and in what turns into perhaps the dumbest reoccurring trick of this game is your man hits the floor and needs to be carried out. Look, twice and spread out throughout the game was fine IW. But when you do this over and over again just about every level later, it quickly becomes annoying.

Now back to... space. Hahah (Fragz : He’s not joking), what? And hey there's a light in the sky there
OK. THAT was really cool. Hahahah, they nuked the International Space Station!

And so now you're back in Washington, and another love/hate affair. That nuke (Fragz : And I was confused I thought it was an EMP explosion lol)goes off above and causes helicopters to fall from the sky! Now this on the other hand is terrific entertainment. But soon you've got to take the White House back. Remember that one building at the end of The Bog in CoD4? Well that's what this is like and you don't get air support. You're expected to somehow make it over several meters of nearly open land while being shot at from fortified positions (Fragz : Advise you take the left flank and watch the door in front). This is the opposite of fun. That concludes the American Rangers story.

Back with Soap's crew, you're having a nice trip in the Caucasus Mountains with Ghost (Soap is in Afghanistan). It's a "defend this thing" mission. It's nice to see enemies getting a bit creative with moving in on you, but it's quickly overshadowed by yet ANOTHER "carry me home Scotty" gimmicks and then hands-down the DUMBEST plot twist I have ever seen in a game (Fragz : Maybe it was me but I found camping in the back room to the right of the laptop thing you had to defend was the best place with bad guys just coming in the front door and side door which you could easily cover without getting flanked at all from either door).



Your commander Shepard shoots you and your partner and lights your corpses on fire.

What. The. Hell. I spent how long looking for this guy Makarov and it turns out he's not our biggest problem? Whoever wrote the story for this game - better update your resume. If your boss has half a functioning brain, you'll be needing it. Never before have I thought that a game's story could actually be improved if Uwe Boll took over.

Well the good news is now at last, you're Soap. An actual character instead of a pair of disembodied hands carrying a gun. And you're pissed. In what's easily my second-favorite mission you get to watch Shepard and Makarov's people shoot it out with each other and pick off whoever you like (Fragz : it is fun but would have thought I would have been caught in cross fire more than I did). But then another epic failure in store for you at the end, your escape vehicle driver gets shot (of course) and you've got to drive the car up a cargo plane's ramp. I'm amazed I got it first try, IW will never make a racing game, I'll tell you that (Fragz : was interesting I to got it first time but I did feel like some was giving me a helping hand the close I got to the plane)..

Skipping ahead a bit, chasing Shepard, oh goddammit, he's on a boat now (Fragz : ATI cards must update your drivers I crashed out so many times going over that dam waterfall). So of course now IW, being too arrogant to realize they can't make fluid driving controls to save their lives is making you the pilot (that is the proper term for who's steering a boat) and you've got to chase him! Then after 5 or so minutes of keyboard-throwing frustration, no fewer than 3 crappy interactive cut scenes, the last a button-mashing game and finally the only friend you and Price have in the world now discussing what they're going to do in the sequel before the credits roll (missed that bit by the time I got to being able to kill Sheppard with all the crashes I had had enough (for the note my drivers where less than 6 months old)).

Whatever it is, you can count on me looking it up on YouTube or GameEndings.com instead of playing through another Modern Warfare. The ratio of "This rules!" to "This sucks" moments in this game are lopsided very decisively on the latter side. Combined with the still highly publicized crippling of the PC game and you've got a 3-day rental at best.


Parting shots:
Bigger and louder does not mean "better." In this case, it's just a sorry attempt to cover up some very glaring flaws. Maybe it couldn't had been a contender after all.

[SRS]Fragz other notes :
Would also like to add the painful no lean you can do without it but it could make for better play with it. Also have the shameful 5 hours on regular in all past CoD’s this is the first one I haven’t gone back to do on veteran on any missions. 3 Day retail yea you might take that long if you don’t sit there and just do it in one. Last but not least where’s the level that reminds you of the game in my eyes CoD has the Sainte-Mère-Église level then CoD 2 has hill 400 CoD 4 the radio station CoD WaW is the sniper mission. The only one that comes close to it in the defending the dinner places in CoD MWII but thinking of it doesn’t make me wont to go play it like the others do.

Spec-ops:

Thanks to [SRS]$w!ftK1L we have had a play with spec-ops in co-op now first I had already gone though 25% of them so half knew what I was doing with [SRS]$w!ftK1L in the deep end. So off we went into our first game which I got the impression that neither of us found it hard at all this was on regular.

So up to hardened it was for us which to the most part was still a little easy (its that [SRS]$w!ftK1L he’s one hell of a gamer) but we did go down and had to revive each other so we stuck with that level. On a serious note I wouldn’t even consider the regular in most the mission due to it being way to easy of 2 players if your alone then yes you might want to consider it.

Well over all impression just like the SP mode they were short but well done would have loved to get modders in there to play with the wave defence as that was some of the most fun levels, now we completed most the of alpha. Bravo and Charlie. I choose to skip the racing game and bomb run as it wasn’t my kind of fun. Now most of the mission we did in either one/two attempts baring in mind this was on the 2nd hardest level out of 3 levels shouldn’t have been that easy.

Also maps seem to be a mix of maps from CoD:MW and CoD:MW2 reused to the most part to suit that was required.
Now breach and clear yes probably one of the most talked about spec-ops mode going is the only one we where not able to complete that we tried after 5/6 attempts its insane and great fun almost needed another 2 players in there to make it a bit easier as there are way to many angles of attacks. It’s a mode/game type that needs to be kept on the pc there’s no doubt about that.






MP:

Shock horror Private matches can only be formed with friends in you steam friends list (start to cry only have two friends ;(). Why they have a match making system that won’t allow players outside of this to join I don’t know.
Now to my shock again the match making system seems ok in the games I have played I was on around 3 bars (who knows what that works out as in ping). I experienced some lag but I couldn’t rule out the other two PC’s on my connection messing that up a little. The only real down side to this match making is your choices you’re limited to 14 different choices and only 4 of those are unlocked from the start. Also on top of that you cannot choice which maps you play you can vote not to play the map but most people leave the lobby and you get to wait another 60 seconds while it finds a player to join.

choices are :

TDM 8-12 players
Mercenary TDM 8-12 players (no parties)
free for all 4-8 players
domination 8-12 players
ground war 12-18 players (TDM and domination mix)
Demolition 8-12 players (destroy two bomb locations)
sabotage 8-12 players
headquarters pro 8 -12 players
S&D 8-12 players
CTF 8-12 players
3rd person teams 6-8 players
Hardcore Ricochet S&D 8-12 players *
Hardcore TDM 8-12 players *
3rd person cage match 2 players
Hardcore Ricochet HQ 8-12 players**
TDM Express 8-12 players (shorter TDM rounds) **
Mosh pit 8-12 players (mixed game types)**

*limited hud, extra damage, friendly fire back at shooter

Right hard core players you have to wait till level 19 before you can get your hardcore maps yes you heard me right level 19 took me over 7 hours to get there. Other wise there only one game type that gives you 9v9 as i was playing that one the most and don’t think i ever got in a 9v9. Above are the only options you get you either like that lot or your get bored fast.

3rd person mode i cant stand it so sorry not wasting my time even testing it.

As mentioned above your ping now isn’t shown as a number but a 4 bar graph bit like your signal on your phone with 4 bars being the best and going downhill from there.
Graphics well thanks to the config file being on your PC I was able to set the cg_drawlagometer on. When using this tool the top column shows the time the computer needs to render each frame. If it is below the line and blue, the computer has more time to render then it needs. If it is above the line and yellow, it did not have enough time to render and therefore had to skip frames. Interesting enough my PC manages to run CoD MW2 better than CoD4 which in my eyes is worrying does it in part confirm that the graphics are not as good. Considering my eyes are telling me it doesn’t look as nice I’m leaning this way (with the above my PC was running max settings in both games).

Perks I’ve never liked them the most pointless one of them all is if you get killed x amount of times think its 4 in a row you get 10 seconds of more health to help you get that needed kill. The other big bug in my eyes is the air strikes and choppers can have each one of its type on the field at the same time some serious over kill in my eyes.

When getting kills is my biggest hate as when you do you get the biggest pop up ever known to man in front of you which can make it very hard to get the 3-4 players running up be hide the one you just killed. It’s not there long but it’s enough to put me off. In general they are way too many pop ups I’m using a 22” screen would hate to be using a 17” wont knock it too much as I haven’t tried.

One nice little touch which I love at the end of each round it has a preset list of achievements like best kill to death ratio and who got the most kills on the top ranked player in the match. I like those kinds of things.

Another worrying thing within the config file is this command ‘seta cl_maxPing "800"’. Which you all might be able to work out means that the maximum ping you are allowed is 800ms not being funny I don’t wont it over 150ms and that’s being kind.

Lag and I mean lag when you have it hell you get it bad it does make the game unplayable I was in a 5 different games one after another with everyone on ¾ bars with me on 2/1 bars and if your there put the game down its shocking.

Right within the config file there are two more commands that are handy

seta cg_ScoresPing_Interval "100” (default)
seta cg_ScoresPing_MaxBars "4" (default)

Top one meaning one bar is up to 100ms so if you have for 4 bars your looking at a ping around 0-100ms 3 bars 100-200ms 2 bars 200-300ms and 1 being 300-400ms ouch (ive seen players play with that)

Now for the image below we have change a few settings so one bar accounts 20ms and theres 10 bars which means 10 bars is under 20ms and 1 bar is over 180ms. This is the players from one game I played. Guest the host time ladies and gents.

This is from a game I think I was hosting got a lovely kill to def ratio. Guess which one I was.


Another well let down I was going to say but as I don’t think ill ever use the function is the privet match settings still some what limiting I’ve never host/work on server settings but even to me that doesn’t look like a lot of settings.


Over all:
As a game by its self it good it’s got features that are worth having Co-op I’ve been waiting for, for a long time on the PC and it works well and is great fun. The match making system is worth having but not at the loss of Deli servers. The only thing is that the game feels half done, yes it works out the box and you can play but options are half there doesn’t even take into account sli/crossfire setups even though there is the command for it in the config file but then graphically I don’t think it needs it on full settings and one good card. Also with graphics it’s not ugly it just doesn’t seem as good as CoD4. It also feels and looks like a port from console. On loading single player it just starts the game you can’t preset any options before you join which means you end up reloading once you set your settings however after the first time it does start at the menu like it should.

Will this game ever be used in benchmarking PC’s like CoD4 and even CoD5 are used I don’t think it should yes it’s a good game but benchmarking you want the best of the best in graphics to fully test PC’s and I can’t see it.

League games and clan games I’m sorry but it is a no there is no room for anything yes Private matches let you create your own games but you still have to have half the world listed in your friends area before you can considering having either type of match.

If someone asked me if they should buy the game I would say it’s a good game and it does what it’s meant to do but that would all depend on what you want it for.

After Clocking more time online this game has proven to me that lag is a real issue and once you have it there’s nothing you can do as it will affect every game you go in after jumping around lobbies for 30 mins that was enough for me. If that’s a multiplayer experience then I’m the pope. It may be down to my connection but on speed testing I was on 3Mb down and .5Mb up after looking I found the reason steam updating my games its one to watch.

My last point is I have no doubt that this can be considered one of the best games on the console and for how the console works I can see why it has the good reviews but for the pc overall there are and has been better games CoD4 in my eyes is one of the them. And for all the lovely console fan boys that sit here and say get a console then, wake it’s as good as a port if it isn’t already a direct port so it’s going to be the same.


Scores out of ten for each section:

SP : 5/10 (set by [SRS]Hungry Joe and I do fine myself agreeing to it don’t get me wrong its fun but..)
Co-op: 9/10 (set by [SRS]Fragz and I think [SRS]$w!ftK1L would agree. Point lost due to some easy play)
MP: 5/10 (set by [SRS]Fragz see * for how I got that score)
Overall: 19/30 (3/5 Stars)

* How I worked out the Multiplayer score. Points where removed from 10 for the following

Pops up on screen to many and off putting - 1 point

No Lean – ½ point (personal point of view)

Mic spamming – 1 point (We shouldn’t have to be the ones put out to have to mute players if they have there mic settings up to load, swearing or general kids screaming down the mic thought there is a mute all setting under sounds which really i shouldnt need to put on)

Cheaters – 1 point (We shouldn’t have to leave a game because of Cheaters)

Lag/lag spikes/high ping - 1 point its one thing choosing to join a game with lag/higher ping it’s another not having no choice other than to leave.

Perks – ½ point I can’t stand them in CoD 4 and I really can’t in MWII they make it way to easy to get kills with them and most require no skill to get the kills using them.

For the note also would like to say I haven’t included no deli server as a – point nor have I mentioned IW.net . However if deli servers was also included with MP I feel you would be looking at a much better MP score/experiance and generally the best of both worlds.

Finally gave in and bought it (special offer at my PC parts supplier)

Have already played the SP on a torrented version so I won't bother with that.

I think it's all been said.

Negatives:
Matchmaking is terrible when you are used to dedis.
60/90 second wait between maps and 10 minutes playing means you are waiting around for something to happen for what seems like ages.
No way to choose maps.
Maps with 3/4 levels make camping on some of them a real pain.
No way to kick offensive players.
Major lag problem if i try to play with any of my US pals.
Host migration fails 2 out of 3 times and spoils the flow of the game when it does work.
Pop up after pop up when you score/achieve/get a UAV etc.
All the above makes it totally unsuitable for a squad based game in my opinion.

Positives.
Graphics are quite average and certainly don't test my HD4890 1Gb but it does make for very smooth gameplay.
Character animation is quite good.
Weapon balance is generally OK and starting loadouts give you guns that allow a kill at close range and distance so you dont feel underpowered from the start.
Quick gameplay is quite good, you are into the action straight away.
Anyone who is good at COD4 will be right at home, no problem with getting pwned

If COD4 is my Steak, Chips and Veg then MW2 is the light fluffy chocolate mousse I follow it up with. Sweet and tasty but not something you could live on. Great for a bit of fun but dont take it seriously.

Pity really because with dedicated servers MW2 would easily be the greatest FPS ever and COD4 would have gone in the bin weeks ago.

non taken i havnt touched it since L4D2 come out and when BF:BC2 comes it its not got a hope in hell in seeing any game time lol

I'd like to point out, on the negative side, that Team Deathmatch is not really "Team Deathmatch." Nobody works as a team, seriously.
Also, the auto balance IW created seems, to me, like it is very inefficient. If you're team goes negative, then you're most likely gonna lose, unless one or two or maybe three people miraculously go positve (i.e. 33-2), but that's like 5% of the time.

I agree, it's "Team" deathmatch in name only. Feels like FFA expect you can only kill half of the players
